Two Voice Poems

The 8th graders finished A Long Walk To Water, and then wrote two voice poems based on the two main characters Nya and Salva. Three students wanted to share with the Skyline community what they wrote.
Our Line of inquiry was: Reading a variety of genres about the same topic builds our understanding of the human condition. Approaches to Learning skills we focused on: communication, transfer & reflection.

...Long and trying.

My family...

...Needs me to bring them

water so we can live,              

 “A harsh desert climate,

a war ravaged environment,

and a lack of safe ...”

… is lost and I don’t know 

where they are.

...Drinkable water...

...Is scarce and hard to find. We walk for days so we can escape the ...

...war...
...scares my mother when

we’re at the lake. She

fears losing my brother

and father.

The walk is long and

hard, and I am alone.

Water.

I walk for miles every day

to get it.

Water.

The sole currency in this

barren place I am forced to survive in.

I don’t want to.

I don’t want to fetch water

every day. I wish I were in

school

was where I was separated from

my village when the fighting broke

out

I was lucky to be alive. Many people

died

at the hands of the Dinka

tribesmen.

from Nuer spears and clubs.

I wish that the fighting would end.

I want peace here.

I want to be happy.

Water.

Water decides that.
